Relocating an Interstate
The enormous project of relocating interstate 195 (The I-way) reconnected two vital parts of the city of Providence separated since the 1950s: Downcity and the historic Jewelry District.
Building a new roadway a half mile to the South and subsequent demolition of the old I-195 took years. Now in its final stages the project freed up some 20 acres of land for development plus acreage for restoring original streets and creating new parks and a pedestrian bridge over the Providence River from the East Side to the Jewelry District.
