Starting in the 1780’s Providence was a leader in jewelry design and manufacturing. After the Civil War, the current Jewelry District became the focus of jewelry making in Providence and Rhode Island. Jewelry design was crucial to the success of a piece. The “Jewelry Artist” became a key player in the industry. Even today, Rhode Island School of Design offers degrees in design in jewelry design and construction
