The project, formally the South Street Substation Switchgear & Control Building, will replace equipment now located in the 1919 building visible in the concept view below, at left next to the South Street power house.
Christine West, Kite Architects principal, said that they consider the "long view" of the building to be important in the design. The concept rendering demonstrates the way they intend the pale modular cement cladding of the building to minimize the silver outdoor equipment when seen from across the river.
The Design Review Committee voted unanimously to approve the conceptual design, and send it on with a positive recommendation to the Zoning Board for consideration of several variances.
