District's Cobra Heads Go LED

Looked out the window and saw progress. Gone is the dull orange of the old sodium vapor bulbs. Now the District will be bathed in something a little cooler, a little bluer. The replacements are part of the City-wide drive to convert 17,000 street lights to Light Emitting Diode bulbs and save a projected $3 million a year.

These new bulbs will be able to announce their own outages. But no worries about Big Brother. While these are smart bulbs, they are not so smart that they can spy on us. They'll just save us on electricity and maintenance costs.

Too bad we can only update the cobra heads to save money, but can't convert the lamp postss to something more vintage and less "cheapest thing available."
